As temperatures begins to drop, there’s more to consider than just switching up the outfits we have in our closet. The harsh cold weather and dry air caused by the drop in humidity can wreak havoc on our skin. From basic itching and irritation to dry cracking skin and even severe and frequent eczema flare ups, things can get uncomfortable to say the least.
Because of that it’s important to put a heavier focus on how we care for our skin throughout the winter months. That means creating a routine that will help combat the effects of the dry air, choosing more hydrating products and defiantly no more skipping moisturizer. No matter if you have dry, oily or combination skin, you can benefit from these 5 tips to help you care for your skin this winter.
Hydrate Your Body- It seems obvious, I know, but with already busy lives and the added hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated. To help stay on top of your water intake, try investing in a water bottle with time markers to track how much water you’re drinking.
Take the Temperature Down a Notch- I get it, we all love the feeling of soaking in a hot bath or taking a long hot shower, especially on those super cold days. But did you know that spending elongated periods of time in hot water removes moisture from your skin? To avoid added dryness, turn the temperature in your showers and baths down a bit and shorten their duration.
Moisturizing Body Wash Is Your Best friend- Some body washes can strip your skin of its natural oils, so choosing one that helps lock in moisture is key. I’m currently loving the Olay Cleansing & Renewing Nighttime Body Wash with Vitamin B3 and Retinol. Not only does it smell amazing, but it’s also formulated to help revitalize and quench thirsty skin. As someone who suffers from dry skin, I’m no stranger to getting out of the tub and immediately having my skin feel tight and gasping for moisture. The Olay Cleansing & Renewing Nighttime Body Wash didn’t leave me with that feeling and has my skin looking healthier every day.
Hydrating Long Lasting Lotion- Let me be the first to say, all lotions are not created equal and, in the winter, you’re going to want the best of the best. That means a lotion that penetrates deeply into the skin’s surface while nourishing and protecting it. For me, that’s the Olay Firming & Hydrating Hand and Body Lotion with Collagen. It’s light weight while still being amazingly creamy at the same time and doesn’t leave you with that sticky or waxy feeling. The Collagen in the formula helps your skin feel unbelievably smooth. I like to keep a spare bottle in my car to reapply as needed after getting in from the cold, it’s always the instant refresh my skin needs.
Dry Brush Exfoliation- Who doesn’t love exfoliating? But during the winter months you may want to scale back on your body exfoliation to avoid causing damage to your skin’s moisture barrier. I love dry brushing to help increase blood circulation, it encourages lymphatic drainage and exfoliates rough and dead skin, but for winter I cut back how frequently I do it to once a week or once every other week.
Bring Moisture Into Your Home- Dry air does not stop at your doorstep. When you run the heat in your home your skin will again be facing the effects of dry air. To combat this, try using a humidifier to help bring moisture back into your home and help keep your skin from drying out.
I’ve implemented these 6 steps every winter for the past few years and my skin has thanked me for it. I hope that they help you keep your skin moisturized throughout the season and that you absolutely love my two favorite Olay body care products as much as I do!
