Four Fall Activities for Your Pets

Fall is the perfect time to get outdoors with your pet. Here are four fun fall activities to keep you and your pet busy all autumn long.

    Hike With Your Pet
Fall provides a great opportunity to go hiking with your pet, but it's important to keep a few things in mind before you hit the trails. First, do your research to find pet-friendly parks and trails in your area. Most will require your pet to remain on a leash at all times. When you head out, bring water and snacks so your pet doesn't get dehydrated or hungry. You should also bring plenty of doggy bags, since most parks don't provide them for you. Finally, you should keep your pet up-to-date on flea and tick medication to avoid the harmful pests in heavily wooded areas. Remember that you don't have to leave your cat at home when you hit the trails. Train your cat to walk on a leash and slowly work up to a longer hike so you can take her with you.

Bring Your Pet Along to Fall Festivals
Fall festivals aren't just fun for families. They also make enjoyable outings for your pet. Bring your pet along with you to farmers markets, apple orchards, and pumpkin patches. Just make sure she remains on a leash and stays calm. If she has a tendency to become anxious or agitated, she may not enjoy large crowds. If she doesn't mind the crowds, dress her up in a costume to get into the Halloween spirit. Some towns even have costume parades just for pets. Check your local area for pet-friendly Halloween activities and festivals. And always be sure the costume is pet-safe!

    Play Some Outdoor Sports
To celebrate the start of football season, engage your pet with some good old-fashioned fetch. Invest in some high-quality toys that are safe for your pet to catch in her mouth. Outdoor games provide great exercise for you and your pet. Though dogs most often love these outdoor activities, you can also bring your cat. With a little patience and perseverance, you can teach your cat to fetch and retrieve toys. Or, just dangle a catnip mouse or feather teaser for her to catch and play with.

    Jump in the Leaves
Tired from a long game of catch? Jump in a pile of leaves and encourage your pet to do the same. You might have to do a little more raking to clean up the mess, but it's worth it. Pets love the crinkly, crunchy feel of leaves, so they're usually more than willing to engage in this fun activity. Just make sure there's nothing dangerous hiding in the leaf pile, such as sharp sticks or rocks.

There's nothing better than getting your pet outdoors on a crisp, fall day. Just be sure to keep your pet safe during any of these fall activities and check for fleas and ticks before your head back inside.
