Five Ways a Pet Can Benefit Your Health

Pets give us a lot and ask very little in return.

There are many benefits to owning a pet. Research shows that pets can contribute to both our physical and mental health. Dogs make great companions, no doubt about it. Dogs are loyal and loving and want nothing more than to spend time with you.

Below are some ways pets can keep us healthy.

Exercise Buddies — According to a study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, dog owners are 34 percent more likely to get the exercise they need vs. non-dog owners. Whenever your dog goes out for a walk, you go too. Whenever your dog plays fetch, you play too. Dogs keep you active and moving.

Laugh a Little! — Pets are especially good at making us laugh. When we bond with our pet, serotonin and dopamine are released, making us feel happy! Cuddling with an animal can unleash oxytocin, the body’s love hormone.

A Friend for Life — Feeling a little isolated and lonely? The local dog park is a great place to meet people and offers plenty of opportunities to engage with other pet owners.

A Purpose — Pets give us a sense of responsibility. With adult supervision, even young children can be involved in caring for a pet. Caring for others, even if that is a dog or cat, gives us a sense of purpose.

Take a Deep Breath — Being with a pet for just a few minutes can lower one’s level of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress. It even works at the office: research shows that people who bring their dogs to work had lower stress levels throughout the day. To learn how to make your workplace pet-friendly, visit
