Coffee Filter Flowers

Level of difficulty:  Beginner

Make beautiful, realistic peonies out of coffee filters! Yes — coffee filters! This craft is easy to make, and the results are breathtaking. These flowers are so gorgeous that people will stop in their tracks to admire them!

What You'll Need:

Let's Do This!

Step 1:

  1. Separate the coffee filters. You will need eight filters per flower.

Step 2:

  1. In a large bowl, combine about 2 cups of water with about 1 teaspoon of red paint. Mix well.
  2. Add the coffee filters to the paint/water mix, making sure to completely submerge them. Let soak for about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the coffee filters from the paint/water mix. Squeeze them gently to remove the water.
  4. Separate the damp coffee filters and lay them out flat to dry completely.

Step 3:

  1. Fold a coffee filter in half.
  2. Fold the coffee filter in half again.
  3. Fold the coffee filter in half one more time. Do this for all eight coffee filters.
  4. Cut a rounded edge across the top of each folded coffee filter to create the petal shape, as shown.

Step 4:

  1. Open all eight coffee filters and lay them on top of each other.

Step 5:

  1. Use wire cutters to cut a stem for the peony flower. Note: You can cut random lengths for each flower you make.
  2. Add a bead of hot glue to the top 1 inch of the wire hanger stem.
  3. Squeeze the base of the coffee filter into the hot glue around the wire to start the first layer of the peony flower. Continue hot gluing and adding more coffee filters to fill out the peony flower.
  4. Poke a hole in the center of a coffee filter using the bottom of the wire stem (opposite the hot glue end) and slide the coffee filter up the stem into the hot glue.

Step 6:

  1. Use all eight coffee filters to complete the peony flower. Fluff out the petals.
  2. Repeat steps to make a whole bouquet!
