Let's Do This!

Step 1:

  1. Use scissors to snip a flour sack about ½" past the hem.
  2. Start at the snip and rip the flour sack along the whole length to remove the hem. Discard the hem. Note: This technique will ensure a straight edge and works with woven fabrics.
  3. Measure over about 1 ½" from the raw edge and use scissors to make another snip.
  4. Start at the snip and rip the flour sack along the whole length to make a long strip. Repeat to make a second strip.

Step 2:

  1. Remove the lid from the mason jar.
  2. Brush deco podge over the mason jar, starting at the top and working your way down.

Step 3:

  1. Press a flour sack strip into the wet deco podge at the top of the jar. Wrap it around the top.
  2. Slightly overlap the starting point and cut to remove excess. Use deco podge to secure the loose end of the strip.

Step 4:

  1. Brush deco podge around the jar, under the top flour sack strip.
  2. Press another flour sack strip into the wet deco podge and wrap it around the jar.
  3. Slightly overlap the starting point and cut to remove excess. Use deco podge to secure the loose end of the strip. Tip: Try to match seams in the back.
  4. Continue applying deco podge and adding strips until the jar is covered. Be sure to wrap the strips under the bottom edge of the jar for a finished look.

Step 5:

  1. Mix one drop of green food coloring and one drop of blue food coloring into one tablespoon of water.
  2. In a small bowl, mix three tablespoons of deco podge with one drop of the diluted food coloring from 5A. Tip: Add more of the food coloring for a darker look.
  3. Paint the colored deco podge onto the fabric on the mason jar.
  4. Let the jar dry completely.

Step 6:

  1. Print out the flower template and cut it out close to the edge of the image.
  2. Lay the image face up and apply a coat of deco podge to coat it.
  3. Lay the wet, deco podged image face down onto the mason jar. Tip: Place the image on the opposite side of the jar from the fabric seams.
  4. Use your fingers to firmly press the image against the jar. Let the jar dry completely.

Step 7:

  1. Use a wet finger to gently rub the paper in a circular motion. This will begin to remove the paper, and you will start to see the image peek through. Do this across the whole piece of paper.
  2. Continue wetting your finger and rubbing the paper to gently remove another layer.
  3. Dip your finger in a little bit of oil (baby or cooking) and gently rub it on the image in a circular motion. You will really see the image darken during this step.
  4. Tie a 32" piece of jute around the rim of the mason jar.
