Help! My Shower Drain Is Clogged and Guests Are Coming

Q: I'm having relatives stay with me over the holidays. Last year around this time, the shower drain in my guest bathroom became clogged. How can I prevent this from happening again? The last thing I want is for my guests to have to deal with a shower drain that isn't working.

A: Having a clogged drain is certainly no fun, but it can be especially inconvenient when holiday guests are in your home. Who knows — you could end up having to book them a hotel! Fortunately, there are steps you can take to avoid any major bathroom dilemmas.

Before your guests arrive, clean out the stoppers in your sinks and bathtubs. Take each stopper out and remove any hair or soap scum that has built up on it. Next, use a clog-prevention product such as Drano® Prevention to remove the gunk that tends to build up inside pipes. This product uses natural enzymes and bacteria to remove the buildup that can eventually lead to a clog. Lastly, consider using drain screens in your showers and sinks. These items fit over your drain opening to help prevent hair, soap scum and other gunk from entering your drain in the first place.

With these small (but important) preventive measures, you can keep your holidays running smoothly.
