Spring has sprung and that means Spring Break is just around the corner. If you’re Spring Breaking at home this year, we’ve got a staycation itinerary to keep you and your crew excited and entertained all week.
Day 1: Bake Up A Storm
Baking is a great way to create Spring Break memories as well as tasty snacks for the rest of the week. Gather your crew and whip up a batch or two of our irresistible Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies. Or get just a little bit fancy with our creamy Vanilla Custard Cups. Find these recipes and tons of inspiration on our DG Easy Meals page. And be sure to get all your baking needs at your local Dollar General.
Day 2: Put It In Park
Plan a fun afternoon for your kiddos at your favorite local park. Pack up a picnic basket full of sandwiches, beverages and everyone’s favorite snacks. Be sure to bring plenty of games such as frisbees, wiffle ball sets, kites and kickballs for your active crew. If your park has a pond, bring along some bread and crackers to feed the ducks. Be sure to bring your camera because this will surely be a day you’ll all want to remember.
Day 3: Campout Close To Home
Camp Backyard, here we come! First, pick out a tent that’s big enough to hold all your campers and find a level spot in your yard. Many hands make light work, so let the kids help put the tent up and fill it with cozy blankets, sleeping bags and pillows. Don’t forget flashlights, snacks, games and a few books for bedtime stories. To make the experience complete, once the sun goes down, fire up the grill or the fire pit and treat your crew to classic campout fare like hotdogs and s’mores.
Day 4: Living Room Picnic
Put a twist on the traditional picnic and bring it inside—a great option if the weather isn’t cooperating. Let the kids pick their favorite blanket to spread out in the living room or den while you pack up a cute picnic basket with the essentials like napkins, utensils, condiments, and paper plates. One of our favorite things about an indoor picnic is planning a menu that’s a little different from your typical picnic fare. We love these Mexican Shrimp Quesadillas. And these Shrimp & Scallop Skewers are not only easy, they’re downright delicious. Find these recipes and get inspired at our DG Easy Meals page. For picnic decor, have the kiddos bring some of the great outdoors inside with an easy flower pot craft. Pick up a few pots, some paint pens, potting soil and a seed starter kit. Kids can decorate the pots, then plant the seeds.
Day 5: Get Crafty
Today is the day for you and your spring breakers to try a new craft. Head to DG and pick up some magazines, scissors, glue and posterboard to make your own creative collages. Or have the kids hunt for rocks of different shapes and sizes, then let your imagination and your paintbrush go wild with a fun rock painting contest. Speaking of painting, stock up on paints and paintbrushes and give each child a blank canvas. Display their creations in your very own art show. Or have the whole family get together and write your own fairy tale. Staple a few sheets of paper together to make a book and have everyone take turns illustrating a page of your story. This is also a great day to organize some family photos into a scrapbook you’ll treasure for years to come. Or take that idea even further by building a family time capsule. Grab a plastic bin from DG for your capsule. Each family member can choose one or 2 items and write about what those items mean to them. Then dig it up next year on spring break!
Day 6: Science & Book Fair
Make spring break scientific with a few easy science projects to do at home. The kiddos might even learn something, but that can just be our little secret. Start off by making your own play dough. All you need is flour, salt, cream of tartar, vegetable oil and water. Or have each child make their own lava lamp with water, vegetable oil, Alka-Seltzer, food coloring and an empty water bottle. Or put your brainy bunch to work making eggshell chalk. You just need a few eggshells, water, flour and food coloring. DG has everything you need to turn your kitchen into a laboratory for the day. Don't want to dirty your kitchen? DG has a wide range of books both in-store and online for easy and fun learning opportunities.
Day 7: Spring Break Spa Day
You’ve been playing hard all week so now it’s time to wind down. Spoil your squad (and yourself, too) with an at-home spa day. First, create that spa atmosphere with your favorite scented candle or air freshener. Don’t forget the wireless speaker for your peaceful playlist. Make sure you’ve got plenty of fluffy robes and oversize towels to snuggle in after you’re done soaking in a nice hot bubble bath. (If you’re sore from all the fun you’ve had this week, add some Epsom salts to the tub.) And stock up on everyone’s favorite beauty and body products:
Let everyone choose their favorite products and treatments to end your amazing staycation feeling relaxed and refreshed.
