Hero Canvas

Level of difficulty:  Beginner

Pay tribute to our everyday heroes with this rustic piece of home décor. Coffee-stained paper creates an aged look on a fresh craft project!

What You'll Need:

Let's Do This!

Step 1:

  1. A)    Use a project knife to cut the canvas loose from the back of the frame. Remove the canvas and set aside.
  2. Use a hammer to flatten the staples so they are flush with the wood frame. This will be the back of the frame.

Step 2:

  1. Apply double-sided tape to the back of the frame.
  2. Flip the frame over to the front and center it over the canvas. Press the frame onto the canvas.
  3. Use a project knife to cut around the frame and remove the extra canvas.
  4. Your frame is now ready to paint!

Step 3:

  1. Cover the frame and canvas with black chalkboard paint. Let dry.
  2. Use sandpaper to distress the edges of the frame.

Step 4:

  1. Print out the template. Make a photocopy, if necessary. Note: If you have an inkjet printer, the ink will bleed when you apply the coffee. You will need to make a photocopy of the print before completing the rest of the craft. If you have a laser printer, you won't need to make any copies.
  2. Brew a cup of coffee and let it cool.
  3. Use a paint brush to apply coffee to the paper.
  4. A)    Add another layer of coffee stain if you’d like. You can add drips and splatters, too!

Step 5:

  1. Apply a thin layer of deco podge onto the back of your paper. Note: Work quickly so it does not dry out.
  2. Lay the paper face-up onto the framed canvas.
  3. Use your fingers to press the paper onto the canvas, smoothing it out and removing any air bubbles.
  4. Apply a thin layer of deco podge over the whole front of the canvas and paper. Let dry.
