Shower Steamers

Level of difficulty:  Beginner

Want to treat mom to a unique gift for Mother’s Day? Give mom a spa every day with these DIY shower steamers!

INGREDIENT MEASUREMENTS:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1-1/2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp essential oils

This recipe makes two batches, filling the heart mold twice.

What You'll Need:

Let's Do This!

Step 1:

  1. Place the ½ cup baking soda, ¼ cup citric acid, and ¼ cup cornstarch in a large bowl. Stir to remove lumps and mix well.
  2. Add the water slowly to the mixture, ½ tbsp at a time. Adding water too quickly can cause the mixture to fizz. Stir between each ½ tbsp of water. Once the mixture feels like damp sand (that would be perfect for making a sandcastle), you’ve reached the perfect amount of water.

Step 2:

  1. Add 1 tsp of aromatherapy oil to the mixture. Use a fork to mix thoroughly.

Step 3:

  1. Fill heart shaped molds with the mixture. Make sure to pack down the mixture to ensure no gaps. This recipe makes two molds worth of steamers. Let sit overnight to harden.

Step 4:

  1. Carefully remove from molds and package in the mason jar. Tip: These steamers can store up to 6 months in a cool, dark cabinet.

Step 5:

  1. Decorate your mason jar! First, soak faux flowers in a cup of water.
  2. Remove from water and apply watercolor to the edge of the flowers. Let dry.

Step 6:

  1. Apply Tacky Glue to the edge of the flower petals. Use a paintbrush to spread the glue evenly over the outer edges of the petals.
  2. Coat the glued edges with iridescent glitter. Let dry.

Step 7:

  1. Hot glue faux floral greenery to the mason jar lid.
  2. Top with your prepared flowers.

Step 8:

  1. Download, print, and cut out desired gift tag.
  2. Tie to outside of mason jar lid with gold detail ribbon.

To Use Shower Steamer:

Take into the shower with you and wet it under the stream of water to activate it. Place the steamer at the far end of the bath/shower stall. Keep the steamer out of the shower’s direct stream to ensure a longer lasting steamer.

Caution:

Oils being brought into the shower can make surfaces slippery. Make sure to use a shower mat and wipe down the shower floor when finished.
